Introduction
When gg dropped their DVD subbing of Code Geass, someone ripped the DVDs and added in the subtitles gg used for the TV subs into the final DVD rips.
The video quality was great, the audio was okay but the subtitles were not. Hence, I began this mini-project on my own to transform the subtitles into something more aesthetically pleasing.
Files
All fonts used are included with downloads. There are two versions of the subs:
Status: All done. Non-fancy version next time.
Changes
The styles of the subtitles were changed and karaoke for the OP/ED were added back in. I’ve also opted to add in signs that were missing. Some typos/grammar was fixed and episode one was changed to use the subs gg used for their DVD episode one release.
I still need help from someone who knows Japanese to look through the subs for episode two because they sound rather weird at some places.

Usage Instructions
Method One: Loading at runtime
To play your subtitles with the appropriate fonts, first extract all the fonts to some location. Then, navigate to “C:\Windows\Fonts”> and copy all the font files there to install them. Directly extracting fonts to the font folder does not seem to work well unless you restart your computer.
To play your subtitles, simply rename the subtitles to the same name as your video files and place them in the same directory and VSFilter should load the subtitles nicely. Alternatively, you can access VSFilter’s options and load the subtitles there:

Method Two: Muxing the subtitles
I actually prefer this method as it muxes the subtitles into the video file. Do note that after doing so, you will no longer be able to seed the torrent linked above as your files’ hashes will have changed.
You will need to download and install MKVToolnix.
You will need to do this episode by episode. Patience! (You could otherwise write a batch file to do that but that’s beyond the scope of this page and I am lazy to do so.) First, fire up mkvmerge GUI and load the video files and subtitle file.
![]()
You might want to untick the two subtitles streams already present to not mux them. If you would like to keep them and make the edited subtitles default, simply click on the item and edit the options below like what I did. It’s pretty easy to use. Be sure to rename your file or your original video might be overwritten!
If you want to embed the font files, simply click on the attachment tab and then add in the font files.
![]()
WARNING: I do not recommend the attaching of the Japanese fonts because they might cause your video player to hang and probably crash when your video is loaded. It’s probably because the Japanese font files are too huge. (in the order of MB)
When you are done, just click on start muxing and wait for it to finish its magic.
Karaoke Playback
If you want the karaoke to work, you have to set VSFilter to turn off pre-buffer subpictures. This could be CPU intensive.

About
thank you ,very helpful
protip: in mkvmerge gui. under muxing there’s a job control. so you can queue it.
Frendh (in the comments on the boxtorrents site) said there’s a missing line in your patched subtitles for episode 2, at 9:49 (which is also missing from the Taedium version). The line says “They’re completely confident in their numbers” I think. Just thought I’d let you know so you can fix it.
Hi everyone, thanks for the help. Anyway, just a clarification: I am not doing any fix of sorts. It’s just something I thought I would prefer to have a version that looks more pleasing for myself in terms of aesthetics. So that’s why I embarked on this mini-project. And I thought it would be good to share.
Currently, as it stands, I don’t have the time to time the Karaoke for OP3. Changing the style to the ones I use are easy enough and I can do that pronto. So please wait a little longer while I time the stuff or if someone else wants to do it, be my guest
Oh yea, and I was wondering if I should do the insert Karaoke. I did the one in Japanese for “Stories” but it was really tedious to do that. So I am a little hesitant to do so for the rest of the inserts. Are there any demand for it? Otherwise, I will only leave “Stories” in.
P.S.: I’ve fixed the missing line already. It’s not uploaded yet. I will complete all the style transitions for the rest of the eps later in the day when I get home. Karaoke for OP3 will unfortunately not be ready yet.
Thanks for doing this, never did like Taedium’s choice of fonts or the lack of pretty karaoke effects.
Anyway I wrote a batch script for anyone that wants it. I don’t really have anywhere to host it so I just uploaded the text files to sendspace. I made two versions, one that attaches the Japanese fonts and one that does not. Personally my player does perfectly fine with the Japanese fonts attached and I don’t really mind the increased file size. But I figured some people might not like it sooo.. Yeah. Anyway you can grab them here:

(This one DOES NOT attach the Japanese fonts)

A few notes on using them, first of all you have to open them up in notepad or something of the sort and save them as a .bat. (or you can just change the extension to .bat either one works.) You need to place the original video files, the subtitles and the .bat into your MKVToolnix folder (the fonts folder that came with the subtitles also needs to be in there). Once everything is in place just double click the .bat and let it do its thing. It will output the files in a folder called Code Geass Remux so look in your MKVtoolnix for a folder called that when its done. Also the output files are just named Code Geass – XX.mkv Not really sure if I should have left Taedium’s name in there.. But I like my file names simple and clean =)
I’ll update these when the subtitles for the rest of the episodes are released as this is only made for 1-19.
I will host the BAT file when you are done with it.
Good job on these, everything looks perfect. Anyway heres the updated batch files:
(This one attaches the Japanese fonts)
http://www.sendspace.com/file/j7o3ut
(This one DOES NOT attach the Japanese fonts)
http://www.sendspace.com/file/xa9bh9
They work the same way as the ones from before, toss everything into a folder and run the bat.
Well today I finally noticed that they deleted the original torrent on box torrents and the new one that took its place had different file names. So I figured I’d modify the batch script to work on the second version of the torrent. So here we go, last time hopefully:
(This one attaches the Japanese fonts)
http://www.sendspace.com/file/u6u2cd
(This one DOES NOT attach the Japanese fonts)
http://www.sendspace.com/file/z6gsri
Again read the notes from my first comment for how to use it. Since I got the first version of the torrent I haven’t actually tested these although they should theoretically work. This should be the last modification needed d’.'b
In episode 1, as a style error, the subs refer to “Kallen” instead of “Karen”. In episode 8 (I think), the style for the Kanji at the end is set to not set to “Karaoke Kanji”. Additionally, I have timed the OP3 (without Kanji since I don’t know Japanese), see:

damn it, too late. Oh well.
i don’t know much about code geass, but i really REALLY wanna see it, so if there’s any information you would like to share with me, it would be much appreciated <3
I just wanted to thank you SO much for uploading these subtitles. I was having terrible problems with some rips I’ve acquired in .mp4 format being able to load the default subs and this helped incredibly!! Cheers.<3
you missed the .5 episodes
Get the release from GG.
A bit late, but I just want to say thank you very much Lawliet
I just wanna say thanks for this effort you put in. I got my subs working even tho i just needed to rename the ass files to the name of the episodes and put em in the same folder. Cheers mate.
I am having a timing error with the subtitles that i have put to episode 15. After the begging credits it goes to the advertisement like screen. It then starts the subtitles during that screen verses when lelouch and C.C. are talking. How would i go about fixing that?
