Bored to Death

Daily Ramblings, News November 16th, 2006 @ 1449h

I am almost bored to death every single day at home. I need to find something to do. A part time job perhaps. But I would prefer to teach some tuitions. If anyone is interested, give me a ring. (Only Sec schools and below please.)

Regarding the recent announced plans to increase the GST to 7%, I had wanted to write something from the point of view of an economics student regarding the issue, but a professional has done it instead. That’s an interesting read.

Speaking of economics, I just remembered I have lots of school work to do during the holidays. Let’s see…

  • Economics Project
  • Economics Article Thing?
  • Physics Tutorial
  • Math Tutorial

I had the ambitious plan of doing some “mugging” to improve on my other stuff but that seems unlikely.

The “official” school holidays is going to start this Saturday. Prepare for the influx of primary school kids!

Singapore Press Freedom

News November 2nd, 2006 @ 1709h

I’ve always been skeptical about how Reporters Without Borders rank Singapore in terms of press freedom, thinking that it was necessary to do so. I was proven wrong.

Remember the Mr Brown incident? And here comes another: The Real Picture behind Today’s personnel changes.

A Google search of the Vel Chua incident led me to this.

The problem here is not just about the reporting freedom; there is also a very obvious problem of elitism. For the first time, I was brought out into the reality of things. I am at a loss of words.

Entropy

Daily Ramblings, Interesting Stuff, News July 31st, 2006 @ 2032h

According to wikipedia, the Second law of thermodynamics states that “The entropy of an isolated system not at equilibrium will tend to increase over time, approaching a maximum value.” It means, in English, that it just gets easier and easier to mess up!

And such is the state of our current world! Why does Israel have to start another war? Why does North Korea want to test fire its missles? Why does Pakistan want to develop a new nuclear plant? Why do terrorists want to wreck havoc? What a messed up world!

will cultimate on Aug. 27 when Mars comes within 34.65M miles of

The next time Mars may come this close is in 2287.

Mr Brown Followup

News July 6th, 2006 @ 1955h

Apparently, Today decided to cancel Mr Brown’s column. This is a followup from the previous post.

This is outrageous! I had always thought Today was not like The Straits Time – being a government’s spokesperson – and would publish stuff that are more open. Apparently, I was wrong. I am disappointed.

Well, I understand that they want to keep their rice bowls, cancelling the column was perhaps going a bit too far. They’ve even refused to publish any correspondence to that letter as said so in the comments of that entry. And anyway, I doubt Mr Brown would have wanted to continue writing anyway. He has his own rice bowl and family to maintain.

Anyways, all the best Mr Brown! I hope you won’t stop blogging and your podcasts will continue =)

The Next Big Thing

News July 3rd, 2006 @ 1514h

Not the World Cup. Not the Bird Flu. Not the N-Korean Missle Crisis and certainly not your next door neighbour moving out.

Mr Brown got a feedback from one of the government’s “spokesperson” in response to one of his columns published in Today. Last time I saw, that blog entry had around 100 comments. (Well, he didn’t exactly have a comment count but I counted the number of times “Posted by” appeared and managed to reach 50 before half of my scrollbar was gone.) Indeed, I wonder how people, offline or online, will react to this. Someone managed to write up an analysis though.

So now we aren’t allowed to “offer unconstructive criticism and non-alternatives”. If we could think of every solution to every problem, we would be able to do alchemy now. And come on, even Wikipedians know so much about Mr Brown and you think Mr Brown is just behind is “pseudonym”?

I wonder how Mr Brown will respond to this.

EDIT: OK, he does have indeed have a comment counter. My bad T.T, 233 ATM.

Day 3

Daily Ramblings, Interesting Stuff, News June 28th, 2006 @ 2018h

…and one more day to go!
According to Xiang Long, I guess I have mild MY ASS flu.

Never imagined how corny people can get. Watch those two links and you will know what I mean. If I were overseas and I happen to see that advertisement with some foreigners, I will go dig a hole and bury my head in it…

Amd you absolutely must see this and this. You might go ROFL.

On to some ramblings. Some people JUST like to sit weirdly on buses. They have to move their butts closer to the edge of their seats and then curl up their legs and press their knee on the back of the seat in front. The poor person in front, which in most cases is probably me, have to suddenly feel a sharp pressure on their back and then have a weird “uneven surface” feeling for the rest of the journey. Every now and then, these people like to move about and I get a free massaging service, not that I asked for it nor is it comfortable. I don’t know if that’s cool, or it just feels better.
