foobar2000

Interesting Stuff December 19th, 2007 @ 1437h

I have dumped Winamp a long time ago for foobar2000 as my main music player. If you are on Windows, I highly recommend you give this software a try. iTunes cannot even hold a candle to it.

Why?

foobar2000 is very extensible and customisable. It uses very little system resources. It can even play a multitude of audio formats that players like Windows Media Player and iTunes cannot support natively (FLAC, for example). It’s very like Winamp though I think winamp is overloaded with a little too much crap these days.

I hear legions of people complaining that it is difficult to move over and that their playlists cannot load etc., especially the iTunes fans who seem to love the player on Windows. It’s very simple to do so and I can help out if you need help.

Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon and Compiz Fusion

Interesting Stuff December 16th, 2007 @ 0147h

I have been playing around with Ubuntu today and gosh, I’m falling in love with it already. It’s currently my “experimental” OS and it will probably not replace Windows Vista soon though I am missing some of the very awesome eye candies in Ubuntu.

For those who think Vista have great eye candies, check out Ubuntu with Compiz Fusion installed first ;)

(I tried to make a video on my own but I failed :( )

Of MP4s and MP3s

Daily Ramblings December 15th, 2007 @ 0040h

I was walking through Sim Lim today to get those over-priced silicon case (~$20) for an iPod nano I won a while ago in the National Infocomm Club competition when I overheard some announcer giving away lucky draw prizes and one of them turned out to be a SD card reader. I’m sure one does not cost more than $5 these days.

Of particular interest was one of them: a supposed MP4 player. Now, before anyone gets the wrong idea that MP4 players are supposed superior music players to your iPod or Zen, I would like to dispel any misconceptions that you have. I once overheard a bunch of aunties on the way to Sitex discussing this and I was horrified by the misconception that people have.

Technically, MP4 (MPEG-4 Part 14) is NOT an audio format. MP4 is, in technical jargon, a container format for video and audio streams. Well, it basically means it is a sort of box that contains both audio and video data. It binds them together for playback on video playback software/hardware. Think of it as a kind of zip file for video/audio. Of course, MP4 can only contain audio data but the audio data is NOT encoded in “MP4 format” – there is no such thing.

On the hand, MP3 is an audio compression format. It’s full name is actually “MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3″ which you can probably tell from the “MPEG-1″, the audio format is quite old. (There is something called “MPEG-2″ which is used on your DVDs. I think they skipped MPEG-3 to minimise confusion.)

If you want to consider MP4 as the successor to the audio format MP3, you already have it as Advanced Audio Coding (AAC) and mind you, most current supposed “MP3 players” like iPod already support this format! So do not be duped into thinking you are paying extra for that “improved” audio player.

Naturals vs Artificial

Like he says:

dear women, there’s no point in getting your boobs enhanced with sillycone (typo intended), because men of science like us like them natural.

And of this comment:

They must float! When I was about 12, I got into a situation while swimming in a lake where I knew I was not going to make it back to shore. I was just minutes from drowning, when a rather heavy-set woman bobbed past me, grabbed my arms and took me to the point that I could touch bottom. I, of course, thanked her profusely for saving my ass! She said, “Oh, don’t worry about it at all!” She then looked down at her rather large bosom and stated, “With these floatation devices, there’s no way I could sink If I wanted to!”

So, I say, with a resounding “YES!!!”…boobs DO float!

… priceless!

Note: I am not in any particular “horny” mood or anything.

We only took one picture and the quality was quite bad. But oh well.

We talked a lot and ate though NYDC is a little too expensive and not the best tasting.

Some people never change and some people changed a tad little. Yan Ci is still the same though Zheng Jie no longer has his long hair.

Ideal Job

Interesting Stuff December 10th, 2007 @ 0313h

I was digging through my ancient hard disk from a long time ago and I came across this interesting excel file that “predicts” your ideal job.
Mine turns out to be a “Street Sweeper” when I enter my full name.

Gosh.

Aspire M5630 (Q66MR86)

Daily Ramblings December 10th, 2007 @ 0118h

I’ve bought a new OEM manufactured PC after two years plus of horror using a DIY rig.

Presenting, the Aspire M5630 (Q66MR86) with the following setup:

My brother commented that it looks like some sort of a hackers hangout. Well, that’s probably because of the dual monitor.

The only complain I have about the system was the inclusion of the 8600GS card instead of 8600GT. Well, I’ve already gotten it at a fairly good price so I think there’s not much to complain about.

Of Death and Spending and Wars

Daily Ramblings December 9th, 2007 @ 0144h

I am feeling really guilty. I have been spending way too much money lately.

My dad is currently undergoing some angst period where he decides to isolate himself from the rest of the world. I don’t know what is wrong with him and I think there must be some kind of troubles he isn’t revealing. He decides to eat dinner outside and just sleeps his time away at home.

My DIY desktop rig which I bought and blogged about at said link just died. It refused to bootup and I suspect it’s some sort of Graphic Card failure. The only problem is, the screw securing the card is screwed so tightly and the grooves on its head are damaged. The only way to remove it is to either damage the card or the CPU casing.

And I have yet to backup my data.

All in all, I’ve spent around $3k on repairing, upgrading it through its short lifespan. I think I’ve had enough fun already. I am giving up on DIY rigs and going for OEM with more solid support. The current support, aka yours truly, isn’t that reliable.

I am currently eyeing the Aspire M5630 (Q66MR86) which offers pretty good specs relative to its price. In fact, I would say its excellent.

On another note, I am going to sell parts of my old computer that are still usable, albeit a little dusty, for jaw dropping prices (to be decided later) with their original packaging. Included items are
– 2 x 1 GB PC-3200 Kingston RAM
– Sound Blaster Audigy Value
– Sony DRU-720A DVD Writer
– nVidia 7600 GT (if I can get it out…)

No concrete plans to get the system yet. We shall see.
