Disappointment and Being Stuck in School

Daily Ramblings, Interesting Stuff January 31st, 2007 @ 2214h

It has been brought to my attention that it is now possible to simply flash a N80 Standard phone to N80 Internet Edition by simply changing the product code and then running Nokia Software Updater. Alas, my joy at discovering this was short-lived – the software for changing the product key doesn’t work under Windows Vista, not even under compatibility mode. Huge disappointment. Fear not, the Internet Edition phone shall be mine soon.

A couple of us were stuck in school today, literally, behind locked gates on the second floor of the V-block. We shouted all around and a bunch of people sitting somewhere on the first floor decided that we were just being crazy and didn’t even bother to help us find someone to unlock the gates. Such an apathetic bunch of people. We were saved by Miss Jancey (spelling?) though.

06/07S56 Chalet

Daily Ramblings, Interesting Stuff January 28th, 2007 @ 1005h

As part of the traditional Junior-treat-senior kind of thing, 07S56 decided to treat us to a weekend chalet over at Costa Sands Pasir Ris. The chalet was pretty cool. I got to know some new friends. Definitely beats the days of being with 05S47. I was pretty surprised to find the chalets crowded on weekends of normal schooldays. If I’m correct, I think I have not slept for 24 hours already.

You can find various photos at the gallery here. If anyone has any more pictures, they’re free to send them to me.

Singapore on Sunday morning is extremely peaceful. Barring the occasional cars, the roads are almost entirely made up of buses.

On a side note, SPAM bots are getting more polite recently – they “apologize” for spamming you.

Finally, I have to pass judgment on the camera of my phone: it is terrible under poor lighting conditions. N73 fares better. Alas, as a way of consoling myself, I chose N80 for its Wi-Fi feature.

Ancient Windows Relics

Interesting Stuff January 27th, 2007 @ 1033h

As the downward trend of visits continue (the visits still stand at near to zero from Wednesday till today), I discovered some ancient relics hidden in the so-called “new” Operating System: Windows Vista. I think you can find this in Windows XP as well.

Behold the relic from the era of Windows 3.1.

Disturbing Statistics

Daily Ramblings, Interesting Stuff January 25th, 2007 @ 2044h

It was by chance that I logged into Google Analytics and BEHOLD! to my surprise, I saw this kind of statistics:

I hope it’s not because of my previous post that I’ve lost practically all of my visitors.

On Writing Interestingly

Daily Ramblings, Interesting Stuff January 23rd, 2007 @ 1910h

During GP today, we were told to read an article which was apparently taken from a blog by an ex-dunmanian.

The point of this entry is not really on the blog entry per se (though I am shocked at what she has mentioned and generally agree with her sentiments) but really on how she has manged to write such a long entry and yet at the same time has managed to keep readers (well, at least me) interested long enough throughout the length of the entry. Her command of English is obviously good.

Now, back to the subject in question (i.e. me): can I write as well? The first most important element of writing a good blog post would probably be the language aspect. I certainly can’t match the level of language competence as her though it’s comforting to know that my language has improved by a lot since eons ago. Even my GP teacher remarked that my recent essay had “clean language” (good expression and grammar?) or whatever he meant (though he added that I should not touch on education topics).

Looking through the archives, I’m embarrassed to say how bad my standard of writing was in the past. Oh, how I scoffed at writing in proper English then… Year 2004 and Year 2005.

Next up is the content. Apparently, blog posts should have the “structure” of a “GP essay” as well, namely the “introduction” (or purpose as I would put it), “body” and “conclusion”. You should have a purpose in writing that entry. Normally, that purpose should be summarised simply in a one liner – the title. Look through my archive and you’ll see many who fails to even attain this requirement and honestly, they’re not even worth your 5 minutes reading. I’m not saying that we should exterminate all such posts to the very bitter end. Having one or two occassionally are okay for a blog lest the blog becomes an archive for GP-essay-length entries. Too many and they spoil the fun.

The body of your entries should fufill the purpose of your post. Don’t digress too much or you might find yourself losing readers (I fear that I have lost some already with my out-of-the-ordinary writing today) or writing overly long entries. Of course, your conclusion should explain how you have fufilled your purpose.

Can I do this? I am trying to find some interesting stuff to blog about everything I have the itch to blog. I’ve moved away from just blogging for the sake of blogging long ago (as demonstrated in the early year 2004 posts) to blogging with a purpose.

I certainly still have a lot to improve on and a long way to go before I can confidently proclaim that I can write decently. This is certainly not only for the sake of blogging but also for the accursed GP A-levels at the end of this year. Time to read more newspapers.

P.S.: The auto-save feature of WordPress 2.1 is pretty cool. So is the improved WYSIWYG editor…

Upgrading Blog

Site January 23rd, 2007 @ 1636h

Currently in the process of upgrading this blog to WordPress 2.1. Please bear with the dusts or any errors you encounter.

EDIT: Update complete. This new version is pretty cool. They’ve finally added some administrative features that are annoyingly missing for a long time.

Beginning of a “Normal” Week

Daily Ramblings January 22nd, 2007 @ 2118h

The start of my so-called “normal” week. Why “normal” you ask? There’s no more orientation to rush down for filming, there’s no more stupid Saturday-sleep-depriving-bored-to-death network courses at Ngee Ann Polytehnic. Lo! and behold, it’s finally over! Shout yeah!

I’ve beeen surprisingly responsive to this year’s angel and mortal game. I mean I’ve bothered writing to my angel and mortal. Well, due to some miscalculation on my part, my mortal knows who I am because:

  1. I used the same paper, torn into two, to write to them…
  2. using the same pen and ink while…
  3. giving them the same chocolate albeit of different flavour.

Sad case. The only comfort I can probably have is that… both my angel and mortal don’t exactly know how I look like. Hmm…

A rather worrying observation: it looks like the year ones this year are well… more hardworking? Perhaps too hardworking to be seen doing tutorials during their breaks. I don’t remember seeing this scene last year. A good or bad sign? Time will tell.

And I’ve kept mum on a certain new prominent figure in the school whom I’ve not been very impressed with. He is trying, but not successful yet. We shall see.

Status Roundup

Daily Ramblings, Interesting Stuff January 21st, 2007 @ 1509h

I’ve managed to fix my PC yesterday after a visit to Sim Lim. Apparently, as was suspected, my Power Supply was busted and along with it, my graphic cards (both internal and external) were murdered. Definitely fits the chinese idiom of “祸不单行” (loosely means trouble doesn’t come alone)…

Since I was planning to upgrade some of the hardware for the PC anyway, I decided to just do so on the spot. The shopping list are as follows:

  • NVida GEForce 7600 GT
  • 1 GB of DDRAM
  • Some power supply unit with 5 years warranty

One Week Offline

Daily Ramblings January 19th, 2007 @ 1827h

I’ve been living without my desktop at home for more than a week already. I’m still not sure what portion of it is not working. Suspecting it was the motherboard, I took it out, along with the Graphic Card and RAM and went down to Sim Lim to check… only to found out it was working! Thanks to Jun Hao, I’m now using his laptop at home to type this. I’m gonna use this to test the monitor later. If that test comes out positive, that means the power supply is probably bust.

Lots have happened this week. And I have lots more to say. I’ll probably say more later.

Thank goodness I bought my new phone – I managed to at least be able keep in touch with my emails.
